TEXT 11. MONUMENTS TO ANIMALS.

There are monuments to people in every country. But in some countries there are also monuments to animals.

In a small town nea'TSt. Petersburg there is a monument to a dog, the “Pavlov” dog. It was the dog that helped the famous scientist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov to make great discoveries. Monuments to dogs also stand in Moscow and in Paris. In France there was a dog, whose name was Barri. It saved forty men. When Barri saved the forty-first man, one man killed Barri; he thought it was a wolf.

People also built monuments to frogs in Paris and in Tokyo, because scientists also use frogs in their work.

Horses always worked for people. Like dogs, horses are men’s best friends. People remember it, and built monuments to horses. There are two monuments to horses in Moscow. Their names were Kvadrat and Simvol. They were race-horses and became champions.

People did not forget to build a monument to a donkey, because in old times they helped to carry goods. Rome, the capital of Italy, has a monument to a donkey.

In Holland people built a monument to a cow. The cows in Holland are famous for good milk and meat. People in Holland call the cow “Our Mother”. These words are on the monument.

In New Zealand there is a monument to a dolphin. This dolphin helped sailors, if they lost their way in the sea. It also helped them to pass reefs.

There is even a monument to a pig. The history of the monument is strange. The people of a German town saw that a pig often dug in one and the same place. “Why?” they thought. When they dug there, they found salt there. Salt was very expensive at that time. So the people of the town got salt and the pig got a monument.

It’s interesting to know that in America there is a monument to a weevil.

So there are many monuments to animals in different countries, because animals are true friends of people.
