On Burns’ Night, many Scots hold a special dinner in honor of Robert Burns, with poetry readings from this poet. Men may wear kilts, bagpipes are played, and there is almost always haggis (a traditional Scottish pudding made from lamb’s offal: heart, liver, and lungs) with turnips (neeps — turnips) and potatoes (tatties — potatoes) on the table. ...

HALLOWEEN is a festival that takes place on October 31. Though it is not a public holiday, it is very dear to those who celebrate it, especially to children and teenagers. This day was originally called All Hallow’s Eve because it fell on the eve of All Saints Day. The name was later shortened to Halloween. According to old believe Halloween is the time, when the veil between the living and the dead is partially lifted, and witches, ghosts and other supernatural beings are about. Now ch ...

This means that usually, this holiday falls around the end of September, but it may also occur at the beginning of October in some years. The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate the food that the land had provided and to give thanks. In that way, it is much like the American ...
