Basic Color Theory
Color theory encompasses a multitude of definitions, concepts and design applications - enough to fill several encyclopedias. However, there are three basic categories of color theory that are logical and useful : The color wheel, color harmony, and the context of how colors are used.
Color theories create a logical structure for color. For example, if we have an assortment of fruits and vegetables, we can organize them by color and place them on a circle that shows the colors in relation to each other.
The Color Wheel
A color circle, based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of art. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. Since then, scientists and artists have studied and designed numerous variations of this concept. Differences of opinion about the validity of one format over another continue to provoke debate. In reality, any color circle or color wheel which presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues has merit.
There are also definitions (or categories) of colors based on the color wheel. We begin with a 3-part color wheel.
Primary Colors: Red, yellow and blue
In traditional color theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3 pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues.
Secondary Colors: Green, orange and purple
These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.
Tertiary Colors: Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green & yellow-green
These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.
Color Harmony
Harmony can be defined as a pleasing arrangement of parts, whether it be music, poetry, color, or even an ice cream sundae.
In visual experiences, harmony is something that is pleasing to the eye. It engages the viewer and it creates an inner sense of order, a balance in the visual experience. When something is not harmonious, it's either boring or chaotic. At one extreme is a visual experience that is so bland that the viewer is not engaged. The human brain will reject under-stimulating information. At the other extreme is a visual experience that is so overdone, so chaotic that the viewer can't stand to look at it. The human brain rejects what it cannot organize, what it cannot understand. The visual task requires that we present a logical structure. Color harmony delivers visual interest and a sense of order.
In summary, extreme unity leads to under-stimulation, extreme complexity leads to over-stimulation. Harmony is a dynamic equilibrium.
Some Formulas for Color Harmony
There are many theories for harmony. The following illustrations and descriptions present some basic formulas.
1. A color scheme based on analogous colors
Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12-part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colors predominates.
2. A color scheme based on complementary colors
Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. In the illustration above, there are several variations of yellow-green in the leaves and several variations of red-purple in the orchid. These opposing colors create maximum contrast and maximum stability.
3. A color scheme based on nature
Nature provides a perfect departure point for color harmony. In the illustration above, red yellow and green create a harmonious design, regardless of whether this combination fits into a technical formula for color harmony.
Color Context
How color behaves in relation to other colors and shapes is a complex area of color theory. Compare the contrast effects of different color backgrounds for the same red square.
©Color Voodoo Publications
Red appears more brilliant against a black background and somewhat duller against the white background. In contrast with orange, the red appears lifeless; in contrast with blue-green, it exhibits brilliance. Notice that the red square appears larger on black than on other background colors.
Different readings of the same color
©Color Voodoo Publications
If your computer has sufficient color stability and gamma correction (link to Is Your Computer Color Blind?) you will see that the small purple rectangle on the left appears to have a red-purple tinge when compared to the small purple rectangle on the right. They are both the same color as seen in the illustration below. This demonstrates how three colors can be perceived as four colors.
Observing the effects colors have on each other is the starting point for understanding the relativity of color. The relationship of values, saturations and the warmth or coolness of respective hues can cause noticeable differences in our perception of color.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Color Symbolism Theories
Color conveys meanings in two primary ways - natural associations and psychological symbolism. No, it’s not mind control. The truth of the matter is that people are comfortable when colors remind them of similar things. For example, a soft shade of blue triggers associations with the sky and a psychological sense of calm.
Successful design requires an awareness of how and why colors communicate meaning. The source of these meanings can be quite conspicuous, such as those found in nature — red is the color of blazing fire and blood, blue the color of cooling waters and the sky. Other meanings may be more complex and not universal.
As a starting point, the communicative properties of a color can be defined by two categories: natural associations and psychological (or cultural) associations.
Natural Associations
Occurrences of colors in nature are universal and timeless. For example, the fact that green is the color of vegetation and that blue is the color of the sky and water has been a reality since the dawn of humanity. These color associations are common to all people. Therefore, this symbolism is both timeless and universal.
Psychological or Cultural Associations
Color may generate another level of meaning in the mind. This symbolism arises from cultural and contemporary contexts. As such, it is not universal and may be unrelated to its natural associations. For example, green’s associations with nature communicate growth, fruitfulness, freshness and ecology. On the other hand, green may also be symbolic of good luck, seasickness, money and greed — all of which have nothing to do with green plants. These associations arise from a complex assortment of sources.
Furthermore, color may have both positive and negative symbolism. For example, although blue is the beautiful color of the sky on a sunny day, it can be symbolic of sadness or stability. Idiomatic American English reflects these traits in phrases such as “singing the blues” and “blue chip stocks.” Red is another example of dual symbolism. On one hand, as the color of fire and blood, it is an energizing, aggressive and bold color. In direct contrast, red is used for “STOP” signs throughout the world today.
Although there are no absolutes, there are logical sources for the range of complex and sometimes contradictory psychological/cultural meanings of colors. These may arise from any of the following:
1. Cultural associations: the color of currency, traditions, celebrations, geography, etc. (For example, green is associated with heaven (Muslims) and luck (U.S. and Ireland)
2. Political and historical associations: the color of flags, political parties, royalty, etc. (For example, green is the color of Libya's flag; it’s the favorite color of Emperor Hirohito and the source of "Green Day" in Japan, and in the U.S., the Green Party.)
3. Religious and mythical associations: the colors associated with spiritual or magical beliefs (For example, the green man was the God of fertility in Celtic myths, a symbolism that carries over into today’s associations of Green M&M candies with sexuality in the U.S. Also, in contemporary Western culture, green is associated with extraterrestrial beings.)
4. Linguistic associations: color terminology within individual languages (For example, South Pacific languages refer to shades of green by comparison to plants in various stages of growth. In Scottish Gaelic the word for blue ('gorm') is also the word used for the color of grass.)
5. Contemporary usage and fads: current color applications to objects, sports, and associations generated by modern conventions and trends. (For example, green is used world wide for traffic lights signifying "go." In Scandinavia, green has been a popular color for many decades. In the U.S., “avocado green” was a popular color for appliances in the 1960s. Today, lime green has been a hip and trendy color in fashion and advertising in the US since the late 1990s.)

1. Определение «холодный» или «теплый» происходит только на основании собственного психологического опыта и стереотипа человека. Так, например, белый и голубой ассоциируются со льдом и снегом, поэтому их комбинация может признаваться холодной;
2. Контактирование на одном цветовом поле двух зон выраженного теплого и холодного цвета взаимное равновесное влияние. Например, при контакте синего и красного цветов первый становится мягче, теплее, второй эмоционально становится пронзительнее и жестче;

Local color »
In painting, local color is the color of an object when seen under flat white light with no adjustment for form shadow or colors of light or secondary light sources. An example would be the assumption that an apple is "red" when it is actually dependent on the color of the light hitting it, color of objects around it, glossiness, and variations within the colors on the surface of the apple itself. Local color is learned in childhood to help simplify and make sense of the world. Coloring books reinforce the idea of simplifying colors. "The sky is blue", "grass is green", etc. when there are actually myriad variations in hue, chroma, within these areas. In order to represent objects realistically, painters must look beyond the simplifications of local color. Demonstrations of color constancy show how flawed local color assumptions can be when the light source has a color shift.
In contemporary sculpture local color is the original color of the raw material that remains unpainted in the completed work.

What is color contrast?
Contrasting colors are colors that differ from one another. Levels of contrast vary from high to low, depending on their position on the color wheel. For example, colors that are directly opposite one another on the color wheel have the highest contrast possible, while colors next to one another have a low contrast.
For example, red-orange and orange are colors that have low contrast; red and green are colors that have high contrast.
While many contrasting color schemes are interesting and sometimes even aesthetically pleasing to look at, contrasting colors serve an additional purpose: user accessibility.
Color contrast for the sake of aesthetic
To say the least, choosing high contrast colors for a design is a bold move. Below are examples of high contrast colors. These pairs are directly across from one another on the color wheel.
They’re definitely a lot to look at. But sometimes, boldness pays off. Don’t those colors look a little familiar?
Art and design that uses high contrast colors really “pop”. Looking at designs like these creates a unique experience, but has a tendency to become a little painful.
Because of this liability, high color contrast is not always the best idea to use in design. At the same time, low color contrast can also be a bad idea; using these schemes makes it hard to differentiate between elements.
While designs with low contrast have an aesthetic of their own, they’re not always the best choice for marketing materials or packaging design.
Using color contrast in physical products is all about finding a balance between the highs and lows. In basic design, there’s no formula for good contrast; it takes a good eye and a lot of practice.

Drawing is a complex skill. You need to learn things like manual skill, pencil techniques, precision, perspective, gesture, anatomy, light and shadow... But even when you're a master of it all, even if your picture has all these elements in place, there still may be something wrong with it. This elusive factor is called composition.
Bad composition can destroy the impact of even the most polished artwork. Yet this topic is often glossed over in drawing lessons, with only a few examples of good and bad compositions presented, leaving it all to your intuition.
In this article I'd like to take a more practical approach to composition. What is it, actually? What is it made of? And, most of all, how can you make sure your composition will pan out before you place your first line, instead of seeing it only after it's all done?
What is Composition in Art?
There’s obviously more to creating a successful work of art outside of mark-making and medium mastery. Our composition plays an important role in how our works are viewed and experienced by our audience.
But before we define composition in terms of art, let’s look at a related subject.
If you’re a musician, then you know that musical works can also be referred to as “compositions”. There is a structure to a song. Each musician plays “their part”. If a musician plays at the wrong time or plays the wrong notes, then the song becomes a mess. Each part is carefully crafted so that the song is the best that it can be. In some songs, the guitar may have more parts and dominate the song. In others, it may be the piano.
We can compare this musical analogy to art-making. Just like a song, each work of art that we create has a structure (or should have a structure). As artists, we plan this structure and execute it as we create the art.
If we don’t carefully plan the elements that we include, our art can become a real mess.
So when it comes to art, composition is the arrangement of elements within the pictorial space (or three-dimensional space with a sculpture). The positioning and arrangement of elements within a work affect how a viewer interacts with what we create.
Just like with a song, the possibilities are endless. We have total creative freedom regarding how we arrange the elements within our works. But even though the possibilities are endless, it doesn’t mean that we can approach composition with a haphazard approach without planning. We must craft our compositions, just as a skilled composer would.
In some works, a specific element may dominate. In others, a different element may dominate. However, we should always make sure that we don’t have too many elements competing for attention. In a song, we wouldn’t expect to have a guitar solo, a piano solo, and a drum solo all taking place at the same time. In a work of art, we also wouldn’t expect to have all of the elements we include competing for attention.
Instead, we should focus the attention of our viewer on one or two elements within the scene. These elements become the focal point(s). All of the other elements within the work then become the supporting cast members.
When you look at a picture, you compare various features of the elements to visually group them for a faster reaction. The higher the contrast, the easier it is to make such a grouping, and the more satisfying it feels. There are many characteristics we can use to measure contrast:
1. Size (big vs. small)
2. Shape (sharp vs. blunt, oblong vs. round)
3. Shading (dark vs. bright)
4. Hue (red vs. green, blue vs. orange)
5. Materials (shiny vs. matte)
6. Theme (a big bad wolf vs. a baby, still life vs. motion)

ORNAMENT IN THE STRIP: PURPOSE, TYPES AND VARIANTS OF IMPLEMENTATION
Ornament in the band is a rhythmically repeatinga pattern located in a confined space in the strip. It is intended for decorating utensils, furniture, weapons, clothing, wallpaper, baguettes for paintings, design of printed products and even as a tattoo.
Ornament in the strip geometric
In the visual arts there are manydirections. Along with realism, there are cubism, symbolism, abstraction and the like. Ornament in the strip also has a conventional unit. It can be graphic and non-pictorial, that is, geometric. Skills in this field of fine arts develop a sense of beauty, a sense of space, symmetry, understanding and use of the rule of the "golden section".
The geometric ornament in the strip is made up ofrectangles, triangles, circles, rhombuses, squares, lines, segments and their combinations. The first drawing skills from geometric figures can be started in early childhood by applying the appliqué. At first, children are offered to repeat the ornament in the strip from the presented sample. Gradually, children should be given more opportunities for creativity. Let them experiment and make up their own ornaments based on their own taste and fantasy. Examples of what you can make ornaments using only the background and the same triangles are shown in this figure.
Floral ornament in the strip
If the motifs of the pattern are specificobjects taken from the real world, for example, forms of plants, man or animals, houses or ships, then such ornaments are considered pictorial. Of course, reality in this art form is not reproduced with precision. Images are simplified, stylized, typed, approaching geometrization. Fine ornaments, in turn, are subdivided into vegetative, floral, zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, subject and mixed. In addition to directly real objects, multicore lines, curls and fantasy ornaments are woven into the pattern. Most often, mixed ornaments are represented, where branches and leaves, butterflies and birds are depicted.
Flower ornament by type "kaleidoscope"
A variety of types of ornaments are usedartists for drawing up carpet patterns. What is most surprising, many artists are helped in this difficult matter by geometry, even you can say - physics. Once upon a time, a children's kaleidoscope toy was invented. Inside it there were mirrors, and at the bottom were splinters of colored glass. When the "tube" of the fragment was rotated, there was a motive that, repeated many times by mirror reflections, appeared to the beholder in an amazing unique fairy-tale light. Many authors of ornaments work on this principle. Folding the paper circle several times in such a way that the sector has turned out - a part limited by two radii and an arc, the artist depicts a motive on it. Copying it to all other sectors, you can get a real miracle! If you want to make an ornament in a strip, it is appropriate to use this circle as a repeating motif. Only it will be necessary to fill the empty voids with a simple ornamental motif.

Alabastron (pl. alabastra) - a small jar for storing perfumes, named after the material (alabaster) the first examples were made from. They were often carried by a string looped around the neck of the vessel.
Amphora (pl. amphorae) - one of the most common forms in Greek pottery, various shapes, always with two vertical neck-handles and used for storing and transporting oil, wine and foodstuffs such as olives. Often with a lid but these have rarely survived.
Askos (pl. askoi) - named after the wineskin which it resembles in shape. The small neck implies they were used for pouring liquids in a small quantity, e.g.: fine oil, honey and vinegar.
Black-Figure Style Decoration Invented in Corinth, the style was adopted in Attica to become the dominant style in Greek pottery. Figures were painted in black silhouette with details such as muscles and hair incised using a sharp instrument.
Calyx Krater - a krater with a body shaped like a flower calyx, usually with a stepped foot.
Column-Krater - a type of krater (wine and water mixer) popular in the black-figure style with each handle supported by a short vertical 'column'.

This article explores the types of ornaments used in Oriental miniature art: girih, arabesque, field and chain ornaments, and their importance in manuscripts. There are compositional structures of art decor. Like all forms of visual art, the art of creation is based on general models of composition. The ornament is very common in Muslim countries and differs from the peoples of Europe and Africa. A feature of the eastern pattern is its endless continuation. It is noted that a full understanding of Islamic fine art plays an important role in analyzing the composition of the manuscript with margins and frames.

In addition to being one of the most in-demand graphic artists of the late nineteenth century, the Franco-Swiss decorative artist Eugène Grasset was also a teacher and theorist. After years of expounding his influential theories at various art and design schools of Paris, in 1896 he published his Plants and Their Application to Ornament, a wonderful pictorial summation of his key idea concerning the use of natural forms as the basis for developing decorative motifs.
The book is structured around a visual analysis of twenty-four common plant forms. For each Grasset offers a naturalistic study (albeit in his pared down style) followed by two plates depicting progressively more abstracted adaptations of the plant's form in decorative designs, as well showing them in the context of their potential use, from stained glass to furniture to vases to lace. The stunning images were executed in colour lithography which required several runs through the printing press, one for each colour, to carefully build the final multicolor print. Although Grasset's name is in lights, the drawings and lithographs were actually executed by his students, including several by Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869-1942), who himself went on to publish his own influential ornamental pattern books.
The debt owed to William Morris, who died the year Grasset published the work, is clear — but in Grasset's patterns we see an even further abstraction, an approach that would prove a huge influence on the emerging Art Nouveau movement of the time.
The images we are featuring in this post are from a scan at the Internet Archive (from Smithsonian Books) though be warned it is missing a few plates. A complete copy can be seen at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, but we are not featuring them here because they've sadly put restrictions on re-use.
An artisan is above all one who has learnt the nature of the vehicle he works in. The next step in his education is the study of natural forms: the step after that is to study and understand the limitations imposed by art principles upon these natural forms when he comes to employ them pictorially or in ornamentation. The draughtsman who fails to apprehend the laws which tell him when to go forward and when to use restraint in representing the object as he sees it, is as great a blunderer as he who mis-draws a tree branch or the features and limbs of his model, or he who confuses his perspective. The art of drawing is not the art of observing forms and objects alone, it is not mere mimicry of these objects; it is the art of knowing how far and wherein, and with what just limitations, those forms and objects can be reproduced in a picture, or in a decorative work.

The word zoomorphism derives from the Greek ζωον (zōon), meaning "animal", and μορφη (morphē), meaning "shape" or "form". In the context of art, zoomorphism could describe art that imagines humans as non-human animals.[1] It can also be defined as art that portrays one species of animal like another species of animal or art that uses animals as a visual motif, sometimes referred to as "animal style." In ancient Egyptian religion, deities were depicted in animal form which is an example of zoomorphism in not only art but in a religious context.[2] It is also similar to the term therianthropy; which is the ability to shape shift into animal form,[3] except that with zoomorphism the animal form is applied to a physical object. It means to attribute animal forms or animal characteristics to other animals, or things other than an animal; similar to but broader than anthropomorphism. Contrary to anthropomorphism, which views animal or non-animal behavior in human terms, zoomorphism is the tendency of viewing human behavior in terms of the behavior of animals. It is also used in literature to portray the act of humans or objects with animalistic behavior or features. The use of zoomorphism served as a decorative element to objects that are typically quite simple in shape and design.

It's not that easy being green;

It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord'nary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,

What Is Composition, and Why Is It So Important?
To put it as simply as possible, composition is an arrangement of elements that makes us see them as a whole. Every artwork has some composition. You either create it consciously or by accident, but you can't create a drawing without it.
In a more practical sense, composition is the relation between the elements of the picture. And this relation, not the elements, is the first thing we notice. At the same time, it's actually invisible for us. It's like the skeleton of a living creature—you can't see the bones, but they make the body look like it does. Without the skeleton there would be no form.
Yet it's the form that we see, and if you try to draw the form only, you may end up with something unnatural. You may accidentally create a form that looks right, but being aware of the influence of the skeleton increases your chances of doing it.
It's the same with composition. You may try to guess how to place the elements of the picture and wish for the best, but you can also learn what makes an artwork look good, and use this knowledge to your advantage.
Good composition is all about balance. Too much is just as bad as too little. If your drawing is a dish, composition is the seasoning. No matter how much time you spent in the kitchen, improperly used seasonings can ruin your work. But what does "proper" mean? And what are the "seasonings" of composition?
What Are the Elements of Composition in Drawing?
Since composition is a relation, there must be at least two elements for this to occur. That relation between them can be based on many factors, making this issue so complicated. Let's tackle them one by one.

The history of painting reaches back in time to artifacts and artwork created by pre-historic artists, and spans all cultures. It represents a continuous, though periodically disrupted, tradition from Antiquity. Across cultures, continents, and millennia, the history of painting consists of an ongoing river of creativity that continues into the 21st century.[1] Until the early 20th century it relied primarily on representational, religious and classical motifs, after which time more purely abstract and conceptual approaches gained favor.
Developments in Eastern painting historically parallel those in Western painting, in general, a few centuries earlier.[2] African art, Jewish art, Islamic art, Indonesian art, Indian art,[3] Chinese art, and Japanese art[4] each had significant influence on Western art, and vice versa.[5]
Initially serving utilitarian purpose, followed by imperial, private, civic, and religious patronage, Eastern and Western painting later found audiences in the aristocracy and the middle class. From the Modern era, the Middle Ages through the Renaissance painters worked for the church and a wealthy aristocracy.[6] Beginning with the Baroque era artists received private commissions from a more educated and prosperous middle class.[7] Finally in the West the idea of "art for art's sake"[8] began to find expression in the work of the Romantic painters like Francisco de Goya, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner.[9] The 19th century saw the rise of the commercial art gallery, which provided patronage in the 20th century.

Most of us started drawing when we were young. Back then, materials and tools were not that important to us. Perhaps, they weren’t even considered. A standard pencil on some notebook paper would often “do the trick”.
But as we grew and developed as artists, the materials and tools that we chose became more important. The connection between quality art materials and quality artwork becomes noticeable along the way and it’s no wonder that emerging artists desire to have the very best materials possible.
If you are starting to get serious about your artwork, no matter what age, you may also be starting to get serious about the materials that you use.
I’ll offer 10 essential drawing materials and tools for artists that are just starting to get serious about their drawing. (This list is focused on black and white drawing media only.)
1. Quality Drawing Pencils
We’ll start off with the most obvious essential – quality drawing pencils. When it comes to drawing pencils, each artist will find a brand that they connect with. There’s no way to know which brand will become your favorite until you try a few.
Pencil sets usually come packaged in nice tins and can be great because they often include the full spectrum of graphite grades. Many sets include pencils with harder graphite (9H) through softer graphite (6B). Harder graphite makes lighter marks and keeps a sharp tip longer, while softer graphite makes a darker mark, but needs constant resharpening. These sets give the artist the ability to work with many different values and varieties of mark. Learn more about the different grades of graphite here.
As far as pencil brands go, there are plenty of great options. Derwent graphite pencils are consistent in their quality and is the brand I recommend.
Individual Pencils
Many artists will find that they don’t use all of the pencils in a drawing pencil set. Instead, they may find that they only use a few of the pencils. For example, 2H, HB, 2B, and 4B pencils would be plenty of range for most of us. If this is the case, then a pencil set would not make sense. Instead, purchasing the individual pencils as they are needed may be the better approach.
Although graphite pencils aren’t very expensive, purchasing individual pencils can be more pricey than just buying a full set of pencils. You may also find yourself hunting for them at the art store.
2. A Sketchbook
A sketchbook is one of the most important things an artist can have. I should point out that I am referring to an “active sketchbook” – one that receives attention on a daily basis. Anyone can “own” a book with blank pages of drawing paper. But the one that actively gets drawn in – on a daily basis is the one of value.
Let me make an analogy to a sketchbook’s importance. Let’s compare a professional athlete’s life to that of an artist.
The professional athlete may workout for hours daily in the gym or on the track to enhance their performance on “game day”. Though the world may never see the hours of hard work that have been put into the workout, the exercise is important – if not crucial to the athlete’s success.
An active sketchbook is the artist’s “exercise”. It is the “hard work” that goes into the development of the artist and it is the breeding ground for innovative, artistic ideas. Though the sketchbook may never be seen by the world, it is the often driving factor in successful artworks and successful artists.
Since a sketchbook is recommended for daily practice, it is important to choose one that is durable and has plenty of pages for all of your ideas. I suggest a sketchbook that has a hardcover so that it will stand up to repeated use and travel. A hardcover keeps the corners of the pages inside nice and clean and will help keep the pages flat if you use mixed media applications.

3. Quality Drawing Surfaces
A drawing can be made on any surface, but the quality of that surface is sometimes just as important as the medium that it is used upon it.
There are a few considerations for choosing a drawing surface that will affect the finished result.
1. The “Tooth” – The “tooth” of the surface is the texture of the paper. The texture of the paper plays a role in how the drawing material is accepted on the surface. Heavier textures will produces lines that may appear “broken”, while smoother textures will produce smoother lines and gradations of value. Some artists will prefer heavier textures while others will prefer a smoother surface. Learn how the tooth of the paper can affect the application of the medium here.
2. Paper Weight – The weight of the paper refers to how much a ream (500 sheets) of that paper weighs. For most papers, the weight of the paper will be directly related to the thickness of the paper. (It should be noted that some papers may have a heavier weight but actually be thinner.) For example, 80 lb. paper will typically be thicker than 60 lb. paper, while 100 lb. paper will be heavier than 80 lb. paper.
3. Acid Free – Paper that is “acid free”, without going into all of the technical details, will stand “the test of time”. This paper is will not yellow over time and is more resistant to fading that can occur when exposed to UV light.
Here are few recommended papers that you might experiment with…
Drawing Paper – Medium tooth paper that is suited for drawing with a variety of drawing media including graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils. There are ton of options for drawing papers, but Strathmore papers are recommended.
Charcoal paper – Heavier tooth paper that is lightweight – almost semi-transparent. Excellent for creating texture. (A variety of media can be used on charcoal paper – not just charcoal. I love it for graphite drawings.)
Bristol Paper – Smooth tooth paper that is heavier (think cardstock). This paper is quite rigid and is excellent for creating smooth gradations of value or detailed line work with ink.
Erasers are for mistakes – right? Think again. Erasers can be a great mark-making tool as well. Each eraser creates a different mark and should be used as necessary according to the specific drawing medium.
Here are a few recommended erasers…
Rubber Eraser – Your standard eraser for erasing graphite. This eraser uses friction to remove any material from the surface.
Kneaded Eraser – This eraser lifts material from the surface, instead of using friction to remove it. It can be pulled and fashioned into different forms to create specific marks. This eraser gets dirty over time, but can be cleaned by pulling and “kneading” it.
Gum Eraser – “The Crumbler”. This eraser is great for removing media from surfaces that are sensitive to tearing. A gum eraser removes the medium through friction, but crumbles as it does so – preserving the surface.
Vinyl or Plastic Erasers – This eraser is the toughest of the bunch. It can erase almost anything. But be warned – this eraser can tear the paper if you’re not careful.
Some manufacturers produce inexpensive sets of erasers like this one from Prismacolor…
You can read more on the differences between erasers here.
5. A Good Pencil Sharpener
Pencils need to be sharpened with a quality pencil sharpener. Use a poor quality sharpener and you could be out of a pencil in a matter of moments.
Pencil sharpeners generally fall into two categories – Manual and electric.
Electric Pencil Sharpeners
Electric pencil sharpeners can vary in price and the old saying, “you get what you pay for” is true for what you get here.
A quality electric pencil sharpener will sharpen your pencil without eating it all up.
Electric pencil sharpeners are nice to have for a quick sharpen of the pencil, but should not be used with colored pencils. The waxy binder found in colored pencils can build up within the blades of the sharpener, ruining the device.
An Extreme Solution
I’ve had the pleasure of working with the X-Acto Commercial sharpener. It is a MAJOR pencil sharpener. This pencil sharpener sharpens pencils in a split second and is incredibly durable. It should last you years.
The only negative is that smaller pencils can get caught inside of the sharpener. This sharpener is definitely on the extreme side of things, but a cool commodity to have around.
Manual Pencil Sharpeners
While an electric pencil sharpener has its appeal, a manual pencil sharpener will do for most of us.
Like electric pencil sharpeners, the manual varieties come in different forms. My favorite is a simple, handheld metal sharpener. It’s a cheap and easy solution that is portable and easily replaced. Remember, if you’re sharpening colored pencils, then a manual pencil sharpener is what you should be using.
6. Charcoal or Conté
There are more options to black and white drawing other than drawing with graphite. No artist’s toolkit would be complete without charcoal or conté.
Charcoal provides a broader range of value and mark-making than what’s possible with graphite. The manner in which marks are made is different as well.
Charcoal comes in both stick and pencil form. Sticks of charcoal are usually either “vine” or “compressed”. Vine charcoal is softer and produces lighter marks, while compressed charcoal – which is concentrated, produces darker marks.
Charcoal pencils can be sharpened like graphite pencils, making them great for details.
Conté is similar to charcoal in richness of color – however the makeup of the material is different. Charcoal is burnt organic material, while conté is made of clay constituents.
7. Drawing Pens / Ink
When we draw with ink, we’re forced to master the use of line. Line is used to develop the illusion of form, texture, and light. Technical drawing pens are affordable, easy to find, and portable – making them great for every budding artist to have. Sakura Micron pens and Steadtler technical ink liners are both fine choices.
When you’re ready to take your ink drawings to another level, you may consider working with a dip or nib pen. This traditional approach to pen and ink drawing requires bottled ink. This approach does require a little more skill and is obviously less portable, but the resulting drawings have more character and are more interesting.
Felt tip pens are another option. I absolutely love felt tip pens. Felt tip pens allow the artist to create a variety of marks. The tip of the pen allows the artist to create a broad range of line quality.
An added benefit to a felt tip pen is the psychological effect that it can have on the artist.
Using a medium that cannot be erased forces the artist to be more deliberate with their marks. As a result, a bit more thought is put into the marks that are made. You can actually improve your drawing skills simply by using a felt tip pen while sketching.
8. Blending Stumps / Tortillions
Blending stumps are essential for the artist wanting to smudge or move material around on the surface. A blending stump allows the artist to create gradations in value without introducing the oils of the finger (through finger smudging) which can make a drawing look dirty or uncontrolled.
Blending stumps also allow the artist to create gradations and smooth applications of value in areas of detail that may be hard to get to otherwise.
You can learn more about using blending stumps and blending tortillions in drawings here.
9. Quality Colored Pencils
Colored pencils are everywhere. You can buy them just but anywhere. But this doesn’t mean that every colored pencil brand out there will get the best results. Quality matters and so does the type of colored pencil that you choose.
Prismacolor Premier
Prismacolor wax-based Premier pencils are soft and buttery, allowing the artist to layer colors to build up a solid application that often compares to a painting. Some people complain that they break easily and they do. But this is due partly to the soft core of the pencil which is also why they are so easy to use and build up on a surface.
Faber-Castell Polychromos
Faber-Castell’s Polychromos pencils are oil-based and behave slightly differently from wax-based pencils. These pencils require several layers to build up depth in color, but the results are fantastic. They’re expensive, but well worth the investment if colored pencils are your medium of choice.
Caran D’ache Luminance
Luminance pencils are wax-based, premium pencils. They layer nicely and are a little harder than Prismacolor Premier, meaning they break less often. These pencils are, in my opinion, the brightest colored pencils. So if you plan on working on darker surfaces, these pencils may be your best bet. They are expensive, so consider it an investment if you decide to go this route.
Learn more about the different types of colored pencils here…Colored Pencils vs. Watercolor Pencils vs. The Others
10. Artwork Storage / Portfolio
Your artwork is important. Even those works that you’d rather not let anyone else see are important. They need to be treated with respect and stored in manner that will keep them preserved and protected.
There are more than a few options for storing artwork, but the most popular option is a portfolio.
There are many different portfolio options out there on the market – each with their own benefits and drawbacks. If you are looking to add a portfolio to your collection, I would suggest looking for a couple features.
1. Rigidness – Look for a portfolio that will keep your artwork from bending. Most portfolios will do this, but there are a few cheaper versions that may not. Look for a portfolio that has a rigid support system.
2. Size – When purchasing a portfolio to store your work, be sure that you provide yourself some room for larger works. Don’t just purchase the 18″ by 24″ portfolio because all of your works up to this point are smaller than this size. Chances are good that you’ll produce drawings that are larger in the future and you’ll wish you would have opted for a larger sized option.

The Difference Between Sketching and Drawing
What’s the real difference between drawing and sketching? To answer to this conundrum, let’s first establish that sketching is a form of drawing, and drawing is the method we produce marks in a sketch. Drawing can simply be defined as making marks on a surface. The two descriptions are often used interchangeably. It’s really no surprise that there is some confusion out there as to the differences between the two and I’m not really sure that a perfect answer exists, but I’ll offer my humble opinions.
Most people consider sketching to be a looser, less refined form of drawing.
Sketches are typically created as preliminary drawings in order to prepare for a more finished work of art. Sketches are typically created with quick marks and are usually lacking some of the details that a finished drawing may have.
Often, the “nuts and bolts” of a finished drawing is worked out in the sketching stage of the artistic process. Composition, balance between values, and proportion can all be worked out in a quick sketch, rather than jumping right into a finished drawing, risking mistakes.
The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 at the Children's Education Workshop by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and designed by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter in the Abramtsevo estate of Savva Mamontov, a Russian industrialist and patron of arts.[4][5] Mamontov's brother, Anatoly Ivanovich Mamontov (1839–1905) created the Children's Education Workshop to make and sell children's toys. The doll set was painted by Malyutin. Malyutin's doll set consisted of eight dolls—the outermost was a mother in a traditional dress holding a red-combed rooster. The inner dolls were her children, girls and a boy, and the innermost a baby. The Children's Education Workshop was closed in the late 1890s, but the tradition of the matryoshka simply relocated to Sergiyev Posad, the Russian city known as a toy-making center since the fourteenth century.
The inspiration for matryoshka dolls is not clear. It is believed[by whom?] that Zvyozdochkin and Malyutin were inspired by eastern Asian culture, for example, the Honshu doll, named after the main island of Japan, however, the Honshu figures cannot be placed one inside another. Sources differ in descriptions of the doll, describing it as either a round, hollow daruma doll, portraying a bald old Buddhist monk,[8] or a Seven Lucky Gods nesting doll.
Savva Mamontov's wife presented the dolls at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, where the toy earned a bronze medal. Soon after, matryoshka dolls were being made in several places in Russia and shipped around the world.

Filimonovskaya Painting And Patterns.
History Of The Filimonov Toy
The history of Filimon's toys, according to some calculations of historians and archaeologists, began another 1000 years ago. It is believed that during archaeological excavations near the Tula region, one of the first, the most primitive, clay toys of that period was found. How accurately established, they were made during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Because of some peculiarities these toys were called whistles. They were small figures of birds, animals and people, which were just the design for a whistling mechanism.
DESTINY OF THE WHISTLES
It is believed that in ancient times, during paganism, whistling could scare off an evil demon or spirit or, on the contrary, attract the attention of the Sun God and ask him to send rain or drought to the ground, and much more. That's why such a whistling figure was kept in every house.
Filimonovskaya painting appeared on toys already in the beginning of the 19th century. As the story goes, its name was Filimonov's toy from a runaway convict - Filimon.
Grandfather was a master not only in the pottery business, but also a master in making clay toys. He was the first person who began to paint clay toys, which made his invaluable contribution to the development of art not only in the 19th century, but also in the future.
In the village where he sheltered, there was a deposit of blue clay, which served him as a material. This village was located near the city of Odoev and, thanks to its history, in the future was called Filimonovka, in honor of the master.
WORKING ON A TOY
Subsequently, almost all the men in the village began to make pots of blue clay. Thanks to this art, they managed to feed their family. Not only men, but also women, and even children took part in modeling. It was they who were engaged in making whistles in their free time from work in the field and at home. This was one of their favorite pastimes of that time.
Sometimes women together with their daughters, who at that time could be no more than 7-8 years old, sat in a circle and, singing beautiful old Russian folk songs, molded their clay toys.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PHILEMON'S TOY
Filimonov's toy was bought home, bought for a gift. The presence of the toy was a very good sign. It was believed that she brings happiness, luck, family well-being to the house, and also protects from slander and evil spells.
Filimonov's toy for children was a so-called guard, a guard, which protected the kids from evil. Many of the historians believe that at the dawn of its creation such a whistle was not a children's toy. It had a completely different purpose. If you look closely, then on each figure you can see magical signs (Filimonov's patterns) that have a certain meaning.
The shape of the toy is also interesting. She suggests that each of them means something.
ROASTING IN THE OVEN
Throughout the year, people were engaged in making clay objects, and then, on one of the spring days, a big celebration was held in the center of a large field before the beginning of its processing. It consisted in burning all the clay products, and after the holiday, take them to the market for sale.
First, they dug a large hole in the center of the field, which was covered with bricks, making brick stands (dishes) under the dishes (such an extraordinary furnace was called a horn), and then the straw was set on fire, which was spread on the dishes. After the straw burned, they waited for the clay to cool down, and after that they took each of their own, now white, products home.
The main place on the shelves was occupied by clay jugs, and between the jugs, women put their handicrafts. Interestingly, after firing, the blue clay became a beautiful white color. Filimonov's toy, a photo of which can be seen in books and magazines devoted to Russian folk art, but in the modern world and in electronic sources, has this distinctive feature.
It is very convenient. In order to paint in the future, it does not need to be covered with a special paint for the base. The burnt clay is already prepared for work.
FILIMONOV'S TOYS. THEIR IMAGES
It is generally accepted that Filimonov toys have a certain form, in which there is a specific designation.
One of the most important images is the image of a woman. It is believed that the image of a woman (ladies) personifies the image of a mother whose main goal is, of course, the continuation of the family and, in general, all life on earth. Visually this figure looks very unusual.
Another image is an animal. Bear carries a symbol of masculinity, strength, and also embodies the coming of spring - a new life. Deer - a symbol of family well-being and happiness in marriage, the warmth of relations between spouses. Traditionally, the deer is presented on the wedding day to the newlyweds as a guard for their future family. The horse is the embodiment of all living things. It was believed that the horse - a symbol of water, sun, fertility. The cow is the embodiment of vigor and strength of mind.
Near the woman, as a rule, birds were always depicted. It was the birds in the old days that were considered the image of the resurrection of all life on Earth. The dawn, the awakening of the earth, of nature is all the embodiment of birds.
None of the toys is like real figures of animals and birds. The figures of people remind them very distantly. To understand which of the people is fashioned out of clay, it is possible only thanks to the details of the clothes on which certain elements of the Filimonov painting are present.
A woman, as a rule, clothes consists of a skirt-bell and blouses, and a man - a bright shirt and pants.
Filimonovskaya painting is very unusual, bold, fascinating look. Patterns on clothes speak about the most important thing - about the connection of man with nature.
Many people want to know how to draw a Philemon toy. The outfit is a bright, clear drawings, randomly scattered over clothes. On clothes they drew stains and circles, leaves and dots, dashes and asterisks and many other elements of the painting. The woman's skirt was always multicolored, a blouse of rich bright crimson color, and the hat was decorated with a bright border. The man must have been given a shirt.
FILIMONOVSKAYA PAINTING. FACE COLORING
The face was always the same. On a white background, we drew our eyes and eyebrows in blue or black. Sometimes my eyes were green. The shape of the eyes was always the same. Eyes - dashes. The mouth must necessarily have been crimson.
Never allowed to draw expressive facial features. It was believed that the figure - this is a guard, so it was the face of the toy should scare away evil spirits.
PRIMARY COLORS
One of the hallmarks of the Filimonov painting is the color of the paints used. It was possible to apply shades of only 3 colors: crimson, yellow and green. And only occasionally it was allowed to use blue and violet paints.
Another Philemon toy, the painting of which was always the same, is an animal. His body and neck were always painted across, and the color scheme used the same: green, yellow and crimson. As a result, the animal was colored with multicolored strips with a muzzle of red or green.
It is interesting that the whistle is a Filimon toy, the coloring of which is not made with special brushes for drawing, but with brushes made of chicken feathers.

What is Plasticine?
Plasticine is a soft clay-like substance often used to make models.
Plasticine is putty-like material made of petroleum jelly, salts of calcium, and aliphatic acid. Although it was originally a brand name for the British version of the product, it is now commonly used in English as a product category in some genres.
It is a modeling clay that was invented in the late 1800’s by William Harbutt. Unlike other clays, it is non-toxic and can be easily reused. It is made of petroleum jelly and talc, which gives it a malleable texture that makes it easy to mold into shapes.
Plasticine is commonly used by artists and sculptors, as well as in stop-motion animation. It is also popular with children, who often use it to make homemade toys and simple sculptures. Although its ingredients vary depending on the manufacturer, plasticine generally contains similar materials to those used in other types of modeling clay.
However, its unique composition gives it different properties that make it distinct from other clays. As a result, plasticine can be classified as its own type of material.
Plasticine is known as clay(modeling) made of synthetic materials instead of natural clay, which is made of soil, minerals, and oxides.
Is Plasticine the Same as Clay?
There are a different number of similarities and differences between clay and plasticine.
Plasticine and clay are identical in that they are both used to model the fixed images, and both contain the finest mineral particles held together by the binder.
So, the answer is yes and no. Technically speaking, plasticine is classified as a clay. However, it is not traditional clay that has been fired in a kiln. Instead, plasticine is made from petroleum products and other synthetic materials.
As a result, it does not harden when exposed to air or heat, making it the perfect material for modeling and sculpting.
So, while plasticine may be technically classified as a clay, it behaves in very different ways than traditional clay.
What is Plasticine Used For?
1. Engraving, Mask Making, Animation
Plastic clay is a vital art material used for engraving, mask making, mold making, special effects, and clay animation.
This clay is not dry which means it can be modified or re-used. Roma Plastolina is a popular choice for professional sculptors around the world.
Roma Plastilina clay comes in several degrees of hardness in almost any application.
Items such as plasticine are attractive to animators because the material can be easily used: they are flexible enough to create a character, flexible enough to allow the surface to move in many directions, and dense enough to maintain its shape easily when bonded with wire armature, and do not melt under hot studio lighting.
2. Design and Crafts
Plasticine clay is commonly used in the design and crafts industry. For example, industrial plasticine clay is a model used mainly for automotive design studios.
The most widely produced product is Chavant. Industrial plasticine clay usually contains sulfur, however.
However, sulfur prevents the formation of various silicone molds.
3. Play and Structure
Plasticine is also used for children’s play and as a model for formal or permanent structures.
It is a popular selection of stand-up comedy outlets, including several Nick Park Oscar-winning films.
4. Sports
Plasticine is used in the long jump and triple jump competitions to help officials determine if rivals are officially jumping. Clay-like plasticine is also used in commercial party games such as Barbarossa.

Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals. Clays develop plasticity when wet, due to a molecular film of water surrounding the clay particles, but become hard, brittle and non–plastic upon drying or firing. Most pure clay minerals are white or light-coloured, but natural clays show a variety of colours from impurities, such as a reddish or brownish colour from small amounts of iron oxide.
Clay is the oldest known ceramic material. Prehistoric humans discovered the useful properties of clay and used it for making pottery. Some of the earliest pottery shards have been dated to around 14,000 BC, and clay tablets were the first known writing medium. Clay is used in many modern industrial processes, such as paper making, cement production, and chemical filtering. Between one-half and two-thirds of the world's population live or work in buildings made with clay, often baked into brick, as an essential part of its load-bearing structure.
Clay is a very common substance. Shale, formed largely from clay, is the most common sedimentary rock.[9] Although many naturally occurring deposits include both silts and clay, clays are distinguished from other fine-grained soils by differences in size and mineralogy. Silts, which are fine-grained soils that do not include clay minerals, tend to have larger particle sizes than clays. Mixtures of sand, silt and less than 40% clay are called loam. Soils high in swelling clays (expansive clay), which are clay minerals that readily expand in volume when they absorb water, are a major challenge in civil engineering.
Uses
Modelling clay is used in art and handicraft for sculpting. Clays are used for making pottery, both utilitarian and decorative, and construction products, such as bricks, walls, and floor tiles. Different types of clay, when used with different minerals and firing conditions, are used to produce earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Prehistoric humans discovered the useful properties of clay. Some of the earliest pottery shards recovered are from central Honshu, Japan. They are associated with the Jōmon culture, and recovered deposits have been dated to around 14,000 BC.[7] Cooking pots, art objects, dishware, smoking pipes, and even musical instruments such as the ocarina can all be shaped from clay before being fired.
Clay tablets were the first known writing medium.[8] Scribes wrote by inscribing them with cuneiform script using a blunt reed called a stylus. Purpose-made clay balls were used as sling ammunition.[24] Clay is used in many industrial processes, such as paper making, cement production, and chemical filtering.[25] Bentonite clay is widely used as a mold binder in the manufacture of sand castings

There are a few different types of clays popular with today's hobbyist that don't require a kiln or any special equipment. The 3 basic types are oil-based, wax-based and water-based.* We can also categorize them as heat-cured, self-hardening, air-dry or non-hardening.
*Note: There are also ceramic and stone-based clays, but these usually require a kiln to be cured and aren't included in our discussion.
The most popular heat-cured clays are the polymer clays . Polymer clays are oil-based and must be heated to cure, however, a home oven can be used and a kiln is not required. Polymer clays are available in many brands and many colors. Most are very stiff when first removed from package and must be kneaded before using. Polymer clay will be plastic like, waterproof and very durable if cured properly.
Wax-based clays are the plasticine clays . This type of clay stays flexible and never hardens. If heated, it will melt. Plasticine is what's generally referred to as "modeling clay". It's also known as "Plastilena", which is a brand name. Plasticine is often used to create clay animations because the flexible clay allows the figure to be re-positioned over and over. Air-dry and polymer clays are sometimes used for non-moving body parts.
The air-dry clays are mostly water based formulas, both commercial brands and homemade clays (cold porcelain and papier mache). Because the water content evaporates as it cures, projects created with air-dry clay will shrink a certain amount. There are hundreds of brands all with different characteristics and the shrinkage rate varies. The finer quality brands of air-dry-clay harden to a matte, smooth, durable finish but must be top-coated and sealed because air-dry clay is not waterproof (with a couple of exceptions).
The New Clay News is all about this last type of clay. If it's no-bake, air-dry or self-hardening...we'll talk about it and search out artists and tutorials! Many new brands and new formulas of air-dry clays have recently become available and this "new clay" is increasing in popularity every day. There are also a few new polymer-based air-dry clays sometimes referred to as "resin clay". Two-part epoxy clays are included because they are also self-hardening.
So, you can see there is a lot to learn about air-dry clays. If you are used to working with polymer clay and want to try air-dry clay, it will take some practice and some experimenting before you find the one that's just right for you. Air-dry clays are not all the same and which brand would work best for you depends a lot on what you want to make with it

Classifications of Clay Types
This section is an introduction to the various families of clays that available to the artist, modeler, sculptor and ceramist and its applications.
Oil-based clays are made from various combinations of oils, waxes and clay minerals. Because the oils do not evaporate as water would. Oil-based clays remain malleable even when left for long periods in dry environments. Articles made from oil-based clays cannot be fired, and therefore are not ceramics. Because the viscosity of oils decreases as temperature rises, the malleability is influenced by heating or cooling the clay. Oil-based clays can be heated, melted and then poured. Oil-based clay is not soluble in water. It can be re-used and so is a popular material for animation artists who need to bend and move their models. It is available in a multitude of colors and is non-toxic. However, some oil-based clay contains sulfur which prevents certain silicone mold rubbers from curing. In which case, non-sulfur oil-based clay should be substituted. Popular brands of oil-based clays include, DeMilano, Chavant and Roma
Water-based clays- Originally developed for use in sculpting Disney's animatronics models, WED (Walter E. Disney) clay is an extremely versatile water-based clay with properties similar to many of today's most popular oil based clays. It's smooth, slow drying, extremely pliable, and works great for sculptors seeking a "fast sculpt" medium. WED clay is still commonly used by professionals in the entertainment industry for masks, modeling, mockup, and large scale sculptures. Like any water based clay, WED clay needs to be kept moist, preferably with a spray bottle or a damp towel. Saran wrap is also commonly used. It is not formulated to be fired.
Polymer clays –This is a type of modeling clay based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which can be hardened. Polymer clay is generally used for making arts and craft items, and is also used in commercial applications to make decorative parts. Art made from polymer clay can now be found in major museums. Polymer clay remains workable until cured generally from between 265 F (129 C) to 275 F (135 C) for 15-minutes per 1⁄4-inch (6.4 mm) of thickness. This temperature is significantly less than for mineral clays and can be achieved using a home oven. The clay does not shrink when cured. Brands of polymer clay include Fimo, Sculpey, Premo, Cernit, Formello, Modello,Du-Kit and Kato Polyclay. Polymer clay safety is the subject of concern specifically the long-term effects of exposure to certain phthalate plasticizers that have been classified a endocrine disruptors.
Dough clay-is a modeling clay, which may be edible or inedible whichresembles the product PlayDoh®, and is often, in fact, called playdough. Playdoughs are easily made at home in both cooked and uncooked versions, and are less expensive than some of the other types of clay. They are made of such ingredients as flour, cornstarch, cream of tartar, oil, and water. They can be colored when made, for example, with food coloring, or have color added after.
One of the useful features of dough modeling clay is that it reusable, though, for example, in the case of a gingerbread house, baking is used to set and preserve the form. Flour-based products — including PlayDoh®, which clearly states that it is meant to be used and reused rather than employed to make lasting items — have a tendency to crack as they dry.
Ceramic clays are classified into five classes; earthenware clays, stoneware clays, ball clays, fire clays and porcelain clays. The three most commonly used ceramic clays are earthenware clay bodies, mid-fire stoneware clay bodies, and high-fire stoneware clay bodies. All three are available commercially in moist, ready-to-use form. Clay bodies can also be produced by mixing dry clays and additives with water to create your own desired clay body.
• Eartheware clays- were some of the earliest clays used by potters, and it is the most common type of clay. The clays are easily worked and can be sticky. Earthenware clays contain iron and other mineral impurities which cause the clay to reach optimum hardness at between 1745°F and 2012°F (950°C and 1100°C).
• Stoneware clays - are plastic and are often grey when moist. Their fired colors range through light grey and buff, to medium grey and brown. Fired colors are greatly affected by the type of firing.
• Ball clays - cannot be used by themselves due to their excessive shrinkage during drying and firing. They are extremely useful, however, when added to other clays to increase workability and plasticity.
• Fire clays - vary widely in their characteristics. The hallmark is their high firing range. They mature at about 2696°F (1500°C). Although relatively free from mineral impurities, they tend to have spots of iron which lend a speckled appearance once fired.
• Kaolin clays - due to their mineral purity, kaolin clays are used for porcelain. Although kaolin clays do have some range in color, they are all very light in color. While moist, they will be light grey and will fire in the range between a very light grey or buff, to near-white and white.
Paper clays sometimes referred to as fiberclay is any clay body to which processed cellulose fiber (paper being the most common) has been added. Earthenware, terra cotta, stoneware, porcelain and bone china clay bodies can be made into paper clay. The fiber increases the tensile strength of the dry clay and enables dry-to-dry and wet-to-dry joins. Commercial paper clays air-dry to a firm, lightweight sculpture, with minimal shrinking during the drying process. Paper clay can be used as an unfired body in craft and doll making. It is used in ceramic art studios as sculptural and functional studio pottery. Commercially paper clay is used to retard warping in clay, reduce weight of clay objects, and to lessen the cost of producing clay objects by replacing part of the clay with paper fibers which costs less. This is a common practice in the brick making industry.

Typography is a complicated subject to learn, but starting with the history of type styles is a great way to gain an understanding of why there’s so many fonts, and why they look so different! Typefaces are divided up into classifications based on the era or characteristics of their design, which helps narrow down your options when choosing a font for your projects. Being able to identify a typeface style can help you make educated design decisions and choose the best font for your work depending on its use.
HE FIRST FONTS
In the middles ages books were hand lettered in the Gothic style that had been developed by scribes, until the invention of the movable type press by Johannes Gutenberg. The first typeface carved by Gutenberg was based on the hand writing style of the time and was used to print the first books in Europe, including the Bible.
There’s a whole series of subcategories of Blackletter typefaces each with its own characteristics, but they’re all based on the original calligraphic style with tall, narrow letters and sharp angular lines. Fonts such as Gutenberg and Fraktur are popular modern interpretations of the first print typefaces.
SERIF FONTS
As movable type printing became the standard across Europe different typeface styles were developed, but these early typefaces were still based on early hand written scripts so they retained the characteristics of brush/pen lines and serifs on the entry and exit of each stroke.
In Italy the German blackletter style was soon replaced with typefaces inspired by Roman inscriptions. Still based on hand lettering, these fonts have the characteristics of angled crossbars on the letter ‘e’ and a high stress which relates to how a scribe would hold a pen. Centaur and Jenson are modern fonts in the Humanist style.
With typefaces now being carved to form printable fonts, typographers began to experiment and design their own type, rather than mimic existing scripts. Fonts such as Garamond and Goudy Old Style are from this era and are characterised with a move towards more upright letters and straighter crossbars compared to previous Humanist typefaces, as well as more variation between thick and thin strokes.
The trend of more upright letters and greater contrast in strokes continued into the Transitional era, which is the period between Old Style and Modern font designs. Transitional fonts such as Baskerville are more elegant with broad strokes becoming much thinner within the character and the stress is now perfectly vertical.
Fonts from the 18th century that took the type design trends to the max were known as Didone or Modern. These typefaces have extreme contrast with broad strokes reducing to thin hairlines, along with unbracketed serifs that abruptly change from thick to thin without a transitional curve. Didot and Bodoni are the two most recognisable Didone typefaces.
Newspaper headlines and product advertising resulted in more attention grabbing type styles in the 19th century, which lead to typefaces being made more robust to withstand the industrialised printing process. Slab serifs have thick block lines at the end of their stokes. They are sometimes curved as with Clarendon, but most often unbracketed like Rockwell.
SANS-SERIF
It’s clear to see the development of serif typeface styles over hundreds of years, but the 19th-20th century saw an explosion of type design where many of the fonts we use today were made. New sans-serif designs stripped away the handwritten characteristics completely to create modern typefaces that were easier to read at longer distances.
The first sans-serif typefaces were known as grotesque (as in “ugly”), due to their rejection of the elegance of historic serif styles. Some Grotesque fonts have a double-story layout for the letters ‘g’ and ‘a’, as seen in Franklin Gothic. There’s also a little flair left over from the serif era with early grotesques having a little contrast in their strokes.
Neo-Grotesque is a sub classification of Grotesque typefaces which refers to the later designs from the 1900s. These fonts completely abandon the traditional characteristics to make them simpler and minimalistic. There’s little or no contrast in the strokes and the terminals are usually perfectly straight, giving them a more geometric appearance. Helvetica and Univers are some of the most popular Neo-Grotesque typefaces.
While some typographers were crafting Neo-Grotesque typefaces, others still wanted to retain some elements of “human” writing, so Humanist sans-serif typefaces also emerged in the 1900s. Similar to Humanist serifs, this style includes some stroke modulation to give the letters a friendlier appearance. Gill Sans and Optima are popular Humanist sans-serif fonts.
Just like the Modern serifs, Geometric typefaces are the result of taking the design trend to the edge. Geometric fonts go a step further than Neo-Grotesques with their simplicity by basing the letterforms on geometric shapes. These fonts are ultra modern, but their structure makes them awkward to read, especially in lowercase. Futura and Avant Garde are great examples of this style.

Wait, I can already change a font’s color. What’s the big deal about color fonts?
Well, digital typography is currently based on vector font technologies that are color agnostic, meaning that a font contains vector shapes that have no color information, and by default, most apps will apply a black fill to the characters.
So whenever you want to add more personalization to your texts, you have to enter a manual and tedious process of setting colors, effects or textures, or even drawing your own creative lettering and composing your words letter by letter. This can be pretty lengthy, so when you need to replicate this process on large amounts of text or need last minute edits, well, you might just give up and skip creative colorful type.
Pretty sad, isn’t it? Now, look at some colorful lettering, like the Latinidad alphabet by Lucaz Matthias below, wouldn’t it be great if you could simply type text with it?

Dymkovo toys, a unique phenomenon in Russian folk art, are among the most popular works of folk craftsmen of Russia and all over the world. For many decades folk art exhibitions have invariably included the colored clay figurines and figure compositions.
The origin of Dymkovo toys goes back to ancient times, and is linked with the local festival of the Vyatka province, Svistoplyaska ("whistle-dance", dancing with and to whistles). The festival included commemoration of the ancestors, rolling clay balls down a steep slope of the river, play-fights, promenading and also rich bazaars selling sweets, nuts but mainly clay toys and whistles made by thousands in Dymkovo specially for the occasion.
The chief manufacturers of toys were women and children, who worked seasonally first, and later throughout the year. There were three types of clay toys, balls, whistles and dolls. The first two are of ancient origin connected with the heathen symbols of fertility, which must also account for the prevalence of women with children, domestic animals, and fowl among the figurine motifs.
With the passage of time pagan symbols gave way to everyday themes, and clay balls and whistles were substituted by figurines and groups that decorated window sills, cabinets like fashionable china.
However, still rooted in ancient traditions, Dymkovo toys were not imitations of porcelain, they developed into an original art, vital and always up-to-date. The toys prospered on new themes and subjects taken from life and, at the same time, modified by people's imagination.
Thus, a new world of Dymkovo toys was formed, with tradition and imagery of its own; new artistic media and standards became established, that were characteristic of the new art throughout its development.
Dymkovo toys appeal to our contemporaries by their artistry, clear-cut characters, witty humor and optimism. These are the traits that make this original art superior to time.

Traditional Russian folk crafts Dymkovo toys
The descriptions of the festival in the local press of the 19th century show its transformation from a calendar rite to a merry celebration with a fair and entertainments where a lot of children delightedly and enthusiastically played with toy whistles. The change in the mode of the festivity brought about new forms and subjects of Dymkovo toys. Though the earliest figures to be found in museums date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, their analysis in combination with the information of the local press give an idea of what the craft had been like during the whole of the 19th century, e. g. the character of toys, the subjects, the output, etc.
The chief manufacturers of toys were women and children, who wolked seasonally first, and later throughout the year. As the material, they used the local red clay ehca vated not far from the village. In the second half ot the 19th century dozens of families were engaged in the production of toys which were exported to neighbouring provinces, to the , Volga towns and even to Siberia.

But Dymkovo toys were not imitations of porcelain, rather their evolution was stimulated by it; still rooted in ancient tradition, they developed into an original art, vital and always up-to-date. Gradually the figurines shed the traces of their ritual significance and became a separate branch of folk art, small sculpture with the accentuated decorativeness of moulding and colouristic scheme. Using their idiosyncratic techniques of moulding and ornamentation, the artists of Dymkovo were able to create original compositions with figures full face or in profile, laconic and generalized in plastic quality, fixed in a kind of „static movement”, and to achieve a well—balanced typization in which poetic fantasy blends with actual experience. Alongside with one — piece figures, there are groups of personages placed on one foundation.
The history of Dymkovo toys gives an unprecedented possibility to trace its development during a century and a half, and to determine the role of collective and individual elements in it. The analysis of individual styles of women—artists working in the traditions of different families reveals the innovations that each of them introduced and shows that the art as a collective phenomenon has remained the basis of those innovations. There appeared not only new themes and compositions, but also a new approach to traditional imagery, experimenting with plastic and colouristic variations, creating new types of characters.
Among the women working in Dymkovo an outstanding personality is Anna Mezrina, whose art was a link between the old and the new forms of the toys. The works of Anna Mezrina are characterized by harmony of moulding and colour, grotesque portrayals, variegated themes and motifs. She increased the intensity of colour in decoration. It was her activity that, to a great extent, determined the ways of Dymkovo art.
Uniform as it is in style and artistic idiom, Dymkovo toy art shows two trends, a more traditional one, which is nearer to the canonic form, represented by Anna Mezrina, Elizaveta Koshkina, and others; and the trend that allows for a more natural and spontaneous interpretation of the canons, which is closer to naivete of primitive art. The chief exponents of the trend are Elizaveta and Zoya Penkina.
Tranks to the care and attention of the government and public Dymkovo art has found itself in a highly stimulating atmosphere; the toys have become the most popular among the productions of folk artists. Since old times here exists the system of inheriting professional skills or transmission, literally „from hand to hand“, from the older masters to younger girls. Several generations of the Dymkovo artists have been educated by Olga Konovalova, Zoya Penkina, Evdokia Koshkina, and Ekaterina Koss-Den- shina. They were the first among folk artists to win, in 1967, the Ilya Repin State Prize of the RSFSR. The works of these women are classical examples of Dymkovo art, which are still appreciated and followed by the young. Of special interest is the artistic legacy of Ekaterina Koss. She has proved that a person who is not linked by family relations with Dymkovo can master the system of local art.
One only needs talent and inspiration, expert knowledge of the history of the art and thourough under-standing of the tradition.
Dymkovo toys have become indespen- sable for contemporary Soviet art and culture. In the centre of Kirov a new building for the workshops has been erected; fifty nine girls and women work there, most of them for more than 25 years. Though decorative as always, the art now tends to increase the significance of the subject matter of the toys. This tendency manifests itself in the interest to thematic compositions, both one- and multifigured. Retaining the general principles of traditional art, the artists develop various trends in it. Some are inclined to thematic diversity, others are especially sensitive to plastic beauty, still others — to decorative potentials of coloration.

Тhe history of the Gzhel painting
Gzhel is a Russian style of blue and white ceramics which takes its name from the village of Gzhel and surrounding area, where it has been produced since 1802. About thirty villages located southeast of Moscow produce pottery and ship it throughout Russia. The name Gzhel became associated with pottery in the 14th century. Gzhel pottery was originally created by potters in their homes; however, fairly early on these potters started to organize into workshops to increase production. The workshops eventually became a factory with pieces being formed in moulds and potters being responsible for separate pieces, a specific style, or decoration. The earliest pieces were created of earthenware. The pottery was painted solid white with distinctive blue designs. Pottery was also produced using a tin based white glaze and coloured glaze designs in blue, green, yellow, and brown, rather than just blue on a white background, in a style that is referred to as Maiolica. The body colour of earthenware varies depending on the raw materials used, and can range in color from white to brown. It is generally fired at lower temperatures than either stoneware or porcelain, and can remain semi-permeable to water until glazed.

GORODETS PAINTING
Gorodets pictures painted on wooden boards is considered one of the best national Russian art crafts. It originated in the middle of 19th century in villages located on the river Uzols in the vicinity of Gorodets (Nizhniy Novgorod province) in connection with manufacture of wooden distaffs.
It should be noted that the history of Gorodets, a town located on the left bank of the river Volga is much more ancient than the history of the handicraft named after it. The first settlements appeared in these places in 12th century. The geographic location of the town stimulated development of various crafts: a famous Makariev fair, the largest in Russia, was traditionally held nearby. Among residents of Volga towns there were many blacksmiths and weavers (as the neighboring fields always provided good harvests of flax), but mostly the local craftsmen liked to work with wood. They produced various wooden articles but their distaffs enjoyed the biggest popularity and were sold at local fairs all over Russia, even into its most distant parts. It was the distaffs that became the first object for the famous Gorodets painting.
Unlike the widely spread type of distaffs that were cut out of a wooden monolith, Gorodets distaffs consisted of two parts – the bottom and the blade. The bottom was made of a wide board narrowed towards one end that had a small hole into which the leg of the blade was inserted. When the distaff was not worked upon, the blade was taken out of the hole, and the bottom board was hung up on a wall, becoming an original decoration.
As production of this popular item increased, the original local style of decorating the bottom distaff boards took its shape – at first decorative figures were cut out from woods of other species and inserted into corresponding hollows. The inserts, made of dark fumed oak, stood out boldly against the lighter surface of the bottom board. Thus, using only two shades of wood and a set of simple tools, the local craftsmen transformed the surface of the board into an object of beauty. In the middle of 19th century inlaid decorations of the bottom boards were replaced by painting. This process begins with toning the background and carving out ornament to which colorful pictures are later added. The bright combination of yellow that stand out nicely against the dark oak, livened with specks of blue, green and red make the boards elegant and colorful. The earliest bottom board, decorated in such technique was made by Master Lazar Melnikov in 1859.
The necessity to increase production of distaff bottom boards inevitably led to simplification of decorative techniques. From the second half of 19th century the labor-consuming techniques of inlaid wooden decorations began to be replaced by easier carvings with subsequent painting of the patterns and from the 70-s of 19th century Gorodets distaffs were mostly decorated by painted scenes only. Due to the simplicity and smaller labor input painting soon completely forced incrustation out. This easier and more democratic technique made it possible to tackle new subjects and to master the original free style which allowed artists to create pictures without preliminary outlining of the contours. Since the bottom boards did not require thermal processing artists could use a full palette of colors and shades.
In creating painted ornaments Gorodets masters used the same popular subjects they had earlier exploited in inlaid decorations and the same generalized way of rendering objects. Later the specter of the subjects considerably widened as artists started to derive them from lubok prints (popular prints featuring brightly-colored pictures drawn in primitivistic style).
The greatest peculiarity of Gorodets paintings lies in the informative character of the pictures. Scenes from everyday life were the most popular genre. Images were conventional in nature, free and decorative in form, sometimes bordering on caricature. They represented life of the peasantry, merchants, wedding scenes with grooms on horsebacks, traditional tea drinking, festive walks, scenes from urban life, characters of folk tales, battle scenes inspired by the Russian-Turkish war, riders, carriages, ladies, soldiers, dogs, varied scenes of romantic promenades of gentlemen and their ladies.
Particularly striking is the traditional rendering of a hot-tempered, strong horse that personifies the idea of beauty as vigor and strength, as well as a rooster in a proud, warlike posture. Next to realistic representation of people and animals one can also see decorative images of birds and animals. There are even exotic lions and leopards, usually painted in pairs, heraldically facing each other. A significant place is occupied by floral motifs – lush rose bouquets; painted in a bold, decorative manner, various flowers, scattered among garlands and bouquets. Wherever the plot allowed, Gorodets masters liked to use the motif of a lush curtain, tied up by a tasseled cord.
Created with the help of a unique technique, the style of the carved Gorodets distaff bottoms was characterized by the following features. The inlaid figurines of horses and people made from the bog oak were enriched by various motifs - tree trunks and branches, silhouettes of birds, etc. Compositionally the surface of the bottom board was divided into two or three tiers. The upper tier usually depicted two riders on both sides of a flowering tree with a bird sitting on a branch, and some dogs beneath it. The middle part was decorated with an ornamental stripe, while the lower tier was used for depicting scenes from everyday life. Gradually more distinctive techniques of Gorodets style emerged – these involved multi-stage process close to professional painting. First of all the artist toned the background (this also served as a primer). On the colored background the first rough painting ("underpainting") was made with a large brush to accentuate the basic color spots and only after that the artist, using a fine brush, carefully drew out the details. The painting was completed with light brush strokes of white and black colors that united different parts into a harmonious whole.
The finished picture was usually framed by graphic lines. In Gorodets paintings many simple ornamental motifs were used – roses, flower buds, grass stalks.
The decorative character of the ornaments was emphasized by the choice of colors and manner of painting. The favorite colors selected for the background were bright green, intense red, deep blue, sometimes black, which particularly nicely contrasted with juicy splashes of the multicolored Gorodets palette. The whitened tones added to the abundance of rich hues. The paintings were made by brush only, without any preliminary drawings, with a free, luscious stroke. The stroke was quite diversified – from broad touches to fine dabs and masterfully executed outlines. The artists worked quickly, using generalized, primitivistic techniques. Each master used his favorite colors and their combinations (paints were mixed with liquid carpentry glue). Though Gorodets artists were quite free in choosing their own individual style, they observed generally adopted procedures for selecting professional color combinations. As a result the finished items demonstrate a harmonious balance of colorful spots masterfully placed over the surface. The painted Gorodets items, while remaining true to the traditional style, have with time become even more colorful, technically refined and up-to-date.
Bright, laconic Gorodets painting, made with a free brush stroke and finished with black and white outlines, decorated distaffs, needlework cases, wooden trunks, pieces of furniture, and various objects of peasant life - baskets, salt shakers, wooden toys, as well as shutters, doors and gates.
The period of 70-90-s of 19th century, associated with the rapid growth of commercial activities in the woody areas around Volga, is marked by maturing of the Gorodets style of painting. As this craft developed (by the end of 19th century people from a dozen villages were involved in it), decorative painting became enriched with new subjects.
The peak of the craft’s popularity fell on the 90-s of 19th century, when production of distaff bottoms reached 4000 pieces per year, but by the beginning of 20th century the craft fell into decline and during the First World War almost ceased to exist. The modern revival of the Gorodets painting is associated with the name of artist I. Oveshkov who in 1935 opened a public workshop in the village Koskovo, bringing old painters together. Oveshkov not only took over the leadership of the workshop, but also organized courses of professional training for younger artists. Under his guidance the range of decorative items began to expand.
In 1951 in a village of Kurtsevo he established an art workshop named "Stakhanovets" headed by painter A. Konovalov, a descendent of a well-known artistic family. The workshop manufactured furniture decorated with traditional Gorodets painting. The range of products - though rather slowly – began to increase. The famous Gorodets hobby-horse was first made at "Stakhanovets", the long-forgotten subjects and plots were brought back to life.
In 1960 the workshop was turned into a factory and renamed "Gorodets ornaments". In 1969 an experimental art laboratory was created at the factory, which worked on creating new subjects and compositions. Despite hard times that marked the Russian economy at the end of 20th century Gorodets painting has survived. The topics changed with time, involving new, less conventional, more modern motifs. At present Gorodets painting keeps developing while still observing the old artistic traditions and styles of 19th century. Though functional applications of the Gorodets products have changed, for the larger part their ornamentation still involves traditional images – long-legged horses, riders, magical birds and flowers.
Since 1995 an icon painting workshop has been successfully operating; here they are trying to revive iconographic techniques of 14th-15th centuries with full observance of the Orthodox iconographic canon. Gorodets masters are also trying to preserve principles of the famous Gorodets carvings that nowadays are used in making coat-of-arms, carved icons and unique works of art.

These impressive and generally iconic paintings by renowned artists changed the art world forever
Modern art began in the middle 1800s, when the advent of photography seemed to make painting obsolete. If you could simply photograph something, why draw or paint it? So, artists had to reinvent art, making it more personal, impressionistic, expressionistic, abstract, deconstructed or minimalistic. In fact, art became whatever the artist said it was. Or, put another way, the artwork was merely a reflection of the artist himself or herself.

The history of fishing Gzhel
The first mention of Gzhel found in the Theological literacy Ivan Kalita in 1328. Unique local clay deposits, leaving the surface, gave rise to the ceramic fishing as long as people settled here.
For almost semivekovuyu Gzheli history happened here a lot of events and changes. Fashion changes, the demands of the market, but gzheltsy from year to year perfecting his skills, learning more and more new technology. The proximity of Moscow as a center of culture and commerce provided by Gzhel masters a huge impact. About every 50 years, fashion changes, including household items, dishes and gzheltsy created different masterpieces of ceramic art. Among the many products there are cult items, decorative character toys. The most skilful masters, which provide a spark of God, could not stop at the simple, utilitarian things they were doing the work more complex or new decorated. These works became a role model and distributed by Gzhel, ranging from every master. Thus was created a style.

• сюжетный рисунок – предполагает отображение времен года, пейзажей;
• орнаментальный – это привычные сетки-гребенки, жемчужинки, а также усики, капельки, отводки и шашечки;
• растительные мотивы – ягоды, бутоны, трава, ветки и злаки;
