Lesson 1
Telephone Etiquette
№1. Read and translate the text. Write out basic tips of telephoning:
1) Everybody has tough days. Before picking up the telephone, smile. It will help a voice sound pleasant even if not feeling pleasant. Here are some tips:
Be kind, polite, direct, enthusiastic, and speak with a strong voice.
Try to be in a quiet room where there is no background noise (i.e. television, radio).
Do not yell or talk to others in the room while on the telephone.
Do not eat, drink, or chew gum while talking on the telephone.
Always have paper and pen by the telephone as well as references, questions.
Make sure the other departments are prepared to take messages.
Never put an employer on hold to answer call.
If asleep when an employer calls, whoever answers the telephone should be instructed to wake the applicant immediately, especially if an employer is calling during the late morning or afternoon hours.
The telephone operator should say, "Good morning (afternoon, evening)", NOT "Speak" or "Yeah"
When answering the telephone and the caller asks, "Are you here?" DO NOT respond with: "Yes". This is confusing to the caller. Instead, answer by saying, "This is he/she" or "Speaking".
2) An answering machine/voice mail is used to take calls when an individual is out. If the individual does not have an answering machine, purchase one NOW so that calls from potential guests are not missed. If the individual has an answering machine, now is the time to update the "unusual" or "unique" greeting. Some tips:
Do:
Make sure message is polite, direct, and businesslike.
Make sure message can be understood clearly.
EXAMPLE: "Hello, this is (phone number). I am sorry I am not available to take your call right now. Please leave your name, telephone number, a brief message, and the best time to reach you. I will get back to you as soon as possible".
Return telephone calls promptly
Do Not:
Make crude comments or mention social references in message (i.e. I'm unable to answer my phone because I'm out partying).
Have music playing in the background.
Use multiple people when recording the greeting.
3) When leaving a message for someone to return telephone call, try to have the correct pronunciation of their name and make sure the following is clearly stated:
Name
Telephone number
Message
The best time to call back
Name once again
Telephone number once again
Then hang up gently

Правила чтения номеров телефона на английском языке
1) номер произносят простым перечислением цифр (если в русском номер 8-915-781-89-21 мы комбинируем цифры в двоичные, и говорим девятьсот пятнадцать, семьсот восемьдесят один, двадцать один, то в английском все цифры телефонного номера говорят отдельно)
8 927 386 03 12 - It’s eight - nine - two - seven - three - eight - six - zero - three - one - two.
2) Если в телефонном номере присутствует «ноль», то эту цифру произносят двумя способами: zero или как букву O.
3) Одинаковые цифры, стоящие рядом, объединяются словом double:
0044 207 564 8 921 - It’s double - zero - double - four - two - zero - seven - five - six - four - eight - nine - two - one.
4) Все цифры номера произносятся в группах по три. Интонация повышается после каждой группы цифр (как при перечислении), а в конце используется нисходящий тон
5) Если в комбинации из трех цифр два нуля в конце, то можно сказать так:
500 — five hundred
100 — one hundred
6) Если номер телефона включает код города или страны, его нужно отделить от остальных цифр небольшой паузой.
01- 629 8495 – ou one … six, two, nine … eight, four, nine, five.
7) Если телефон начинается с трех одинаковых цифр, произносить их следует по отдельности.
Телефоны экстренных служб: полиция, скорая помощь, пожарная служба, читаются по отдельности.
999 — Англия
911 — США

Quick development of technologies brought cellular (cell) phones to the market. Cellular phone systems enable businessmen to conduct business by phone from everywhere. Businesspeople are able to do all kinds of over the phone. They are able to receive information and messages. They can make and confirm appointments. Managers can phone in orders and dictate work to their offices. Some phones make it possible to access computer data and Internet. Mobile phones can be used in cars, airports and other public places. Mobile communication makes it possible for businesspeople to use the time more productively and be always in touch.
Making telephone calls is not always easy – especially if don’t know the person on the other end of the line very well. In all cases- answering or making a phone call people should be tactful, efficient, helpful and very polite.
There are some rules of conducting the telephone conversation in English. First you should identify yourself, request your correspondent and explain the purpose of you call. At the end of conversation don’t forget about thanks and final greeting. Some set expressions can be used for these purposes. When secretary answers the phone, he says: “What can I do for you?”, you ask: “Can I speak to Mr. Ivanov, please?” To introduce yourself you can say: “This is Mr. Brown speaking”. If the person you need is in, she says: “Wait a minute/ Hold on, please. I’m putting you through. Go ahead”. If the person you need is out, she says: “I’m afraid, Mr. Ivanov is not available at the moment.” You can say in reply: “Could you leave a message?” or “Can you ask him to phone me back?”

Lesson 2
Word formation (adverbs)
№1. Study the material “Adverbs”:
По форме наречия делятся на простые, производные, сложные и составные. Простые наречия не делятся на составные части, например:
soon (скоро), then (тогда), fast (быстро), when (когда), here (здесь), why (почему),
there (там), where (где, куда) и т.д.
Производные наречия образуются с помощью суффикса –ly, который прибавляется к прилагательным:
bad (плохой) + ly=badly (плохой)
easy (легкий) + ly=easily (легко)
При прибавлении суффикса –ly, с прилагательными происходят следующие изменения: окончание
le – меняется на ly (gentle – gently)
y – меняется на ily (easy – easily)
ic – меняется на ically (energetic – energetically, automatic - automatically)
ue –меняется на uly (true – truly)
ll –меняется на lly (full – fully)
Кроме суффикса –ly, есть и другие суффиксы. Это –wards, -long, -wise.
clockwise –в направлении часовой стрелки, forward – вперед,
homewards – к дому, идущий к дому, seawards – к морю, идущий к морю,
afterwards – впоследствии, потом, позже
Запомните:
day + ly = daily (eжедневно), week + ly =weekly (eженедельно),
month + ly = monthly (ежемесячно)
Сложные наречия образуются путем словосложения:
sometimes -иногда, inside – внутри, meantime – тем временем, overhead – наверху, anyway – на полпути
Составные наречия – это сочетание служебного слова со знаменательным словом, объединенное единым значением:
at first – сначала, in vain – напрасно, at length – подробно, at least – по крайней мере
Некоторые прилагательные и наречия имеют одинаковую форму.
fast (быстрый, быстро)
long (длинный, длинно/долго)
low (низкий, низко)
high (высокий, высоко)
little (маленький, мало)
wide (широкий, широко/далеко)
far (далекий, далеко)
early (ранний, рано)
late (поздний, поздно)
hard (усердный, усердно)
near (близкий, близко)
Однако, при прибавлении к некоторым вышеперечисленным словам суффикса –ly, их значения меняются.
hard (усердный, усердно) hardly (едва)
late (поздний, поздно) lately (недавно, в последнее время) near (близкий, близко) nearly (почти)
high (высокий, высоко) highly (очень, в высшей степени)
№2. Translate into Russian, write out all adverbs:
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even a whole sentence. Adverbs answer questions such as: How? (She sings beautifully.), When? (They arrived yesterday.), Where? (He looked everywhere.), To what extent? (She was completely shocked.). The general order of adverbs in a sentence follows MPT (Manner – Place – Time).
There are several types of adverbs in English, each serving a different purpose. Adverbs of Manner describe how an action happens and usually end in “-ly”, but not always. They are usually placed after the main verb or after the object. Adverbs of Time describe when something happens. They are usually placed at the end of the sentence, but some (e.g., “already”) can appear before the main verb. Adverbs of Place describe where an action happens. They generally go after the verb or after the object. Adverbs of Frequency describe how often something happens. They usually go before the main verb but after the verb “to be”. Adverbs of Degree describe the intensity or degree of an action, adjective, or another adverb. They go before the adjective or adverb they modify. Sentence Adverbs modify the entire sentence rather than a single word. Adverbs of Probability express how sure or certain we are about something. They usually go before the main verb but after the verb “to be”. Interrogative adverbs are used to ask questions about time, place, reason, or manner. These adverbs often begin a question and help gather more information.
Regular Adverbs are formed by adding “-ly” to an adjective.
Irregular Adverbs do not follow this pattern and either remain the same as their adjective form or change completely.
Comparison of Adverbs, like adjectives, can be used in comparative and superlative forms.

Lesson 4
Numerals
№1. Study the material “Numerals”
2 – two dollars, €14,99 – fourteen euros ninety nine (cents, euro cents), £204 – two hundred and four pounds
Номера телефонов, счетов, карт и т. д. читают не сотнями-десятками, как на русском, а отдельными цифрами: 555-757-23-11 – five, five, five, seven, five, seven, two, three, one, one.
Простые дроби (fractions) в английском языке часто пишутся словами. Для числителя (numerator) используются количественные числительные, а для знаменателя (denominator) – порядковые. Знаменатель, принимает окончание множественного числа -s, если числитель больше единицы. Пример: 1/5 – one fifth, 4/7 – four sevenths, 2 ¼ - two and one fourth/quarter
Десятичные дроби (decimals) в английском языке читаются с помощью слова point (точка), после которой все цифры читаются отдельно. Это правило не относится к счету денег. Пример: 0.5 – zero point five, 43.75 – forty-three point seventy-five
Порядковые числительные - обозначают порядок предметов при счете и отвечают на вопрос «какой». Образуются они путем прибавления к количественному числительному суффикса -th. Как правило, перед порядковым числительным мы добавляем определённый артикль the. Порядковые числительные от количественных числительных one, two и three образуются не по правилам. Эти числительные следует запомнить: one - first, two - second, three – third. Если числительное оканчивается на гласную y, то при добавлении -th мы меняем гласную на -ie. Чтобы образовать порядковое числительное, к количественному числительному eight мы добавляем только -h. В числительном twelve при добавлении -th буквосочетание -ve меняется на -f. Буквосочетание -ve также меняется на -f в числительном five – fifth. Когда мы кратко пишем порядковые числительные, мы указываем само число и добавляем соответствующее окончание.

№6. Read some rules of a successful job interview and write out what the most important part of the job interview is.
Congratulations! Your resume have made a good impression and the employer has called you in for an interview. Now it’s time to make sure that you also have the right type of English for that job interview.
There are some very important rules to consider when taking a job interview.
Work Experience
Work experience is the most important part of any job interview. It is true that education is also important, however, most employers are more impressed by extensive work experience than by university degrees. Employers want to know exactly what you did and how well you accomplished your tasks. This is the part of the interview during which you can make the best impression. It’s important to give full, detailed answers. Be confident, and emphasize your accomplishments in past positions.
Qualifications
Qualifications include any education, as well as any special training you may have had (such as computer courses). Mention your English studies. This is very important as English is not your first language and the employer may be concerned about this fact. Assure the employer that you are continuing to improve your English skills by saying that you study a certain number of hours a week to improve your skills.
Talking about Responsibilities
You will need to demonstrate your qualifications and skills which are directly applicable to the job you are applying for. If past job skills were not exactly the same as what you will need on the new job, make sure to detail how they are similar to job skills you will need for the new position.
№7. Fill in the application form below with the information about yourself:
№8. Translate the definitions of the words:
Résumé or CV (curriculum vitae) - a short written description of your education, qualifications, previous jobs, and sometimes also your personal interests, that you send to an employer when you are trying to get a job.
Employer - a person, company, or organization that pays people to work for them.
Employee - someone who is paid to work for someone else.
Appointment - a formal arrangement to meet or visit someone at a particular time and place.
Job interview - a meeting in which an employer asks the person applying for a job questions to see whether they would be the right person to do that job.
Application form - a form that you complete in order to apply for a job, a place on a course, etc. or to get something such as a loan or a licence.
Experience - (the process of getting) knowledge or skill from doing, seeing, or feeling things.
Skill - an ability to do an activity or job well, especially because you have practiced it.
Responsibility - something that it is your job or duty to deal with.
Objective - something that you plan to do or achieve.
Lesson 6
Pronouns
№1. Study the material:
Особенности формообразования неопределённых местоимений
Неопределённые местоимения употребляются при описании человека, вещи или места, если неизвестно или неважно кто / что / где это конкретно.
Неопределённые местоимения / Indefinite pronouns делятся на четыре группы:
some; any; no; every.
Их производные образуются путём добавления к some, any, no и every:
- если речь идёт о людях, то добавляется - body или -one;
- если речь идёт о вещах, то добавляется –thing;

Lesson 7
Job interviews
№1. Read, translate the text and answer the common interview questions:
Job interviews can be a nerve-racking experience, especially when you don’t feel prepared for them. And with the variety of interview questions that can be asked these days, it’s hard to know what type of questions you should prepare for. Here are three types of interview questions that you should practise answering before that important job interview.
Common interview questions: Tell us about yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to leave your current job?
These questions are for the interviewer to get to know you and to see if you’re the best person for the job. Don’t simply list things like your hobbies, your strengths or your work experience. Instead, give examples and use them to show your personality and the characteristics you have that make you perfect for the job. Your interviewer may want to ask questions about certain areas of your CV, so use this opportunity to link your experience to the job you’re applying for.
Avoid: Giving a detailed life history or telling long stories that are irrelevant to the job or to the company.
Competency questions: Tell me about a time you had to work as a team. Tell me about a time you had to use your creativity to solve a problem. Tell me about a time when you experienced conflict with a colleague and how you handled that situation.
Here, the candidate is asked questions about situations they have faced in the past that can demonstrate a particular skill they have. These could include skills like critical thinking, influencing, problem solving or flexibility. Interviewers often want to hear about challenges you’ve had, not just about times when everything went smoothly, so be ready with examples such as how you resolved conflict in your team or dealt with someone who was not working well. This will demonstrate that you can handle difficult situations.
When preparing for the job interview, read the job description carefully for the required skills and abilities and try to recall situations where you had to use these skills. Then use the STAR technique when talking about these examples:
• Situation – Give details about the context of your example and what you were trying to do.
• Task – Describe your responsibilities and the challenges you faced.
• Action – Describe what steps you took to deal with the situation.
• Result – Talk about the end result and how you contributed to this outcome.
Avoid: Going in unprepared and having to think up examples, or saying you’ve never faced any challenges at work.
Hypothetical questions: What would you do if you had a different opinion from your boss about how to do something? How would you deal with a large volume of work with several staff members off work? What would you do if you had to introduce a new policy that you knew was going to be unpopular in your team?
Hypothetical interview questions are similar to competency questions except that instead of asking you to talk about an experience you’ve had in the past, they present you with an imaginary situation that you might face in your new job.
This might seem difficult to prepare for, but remember that your answers are meant to demonstrate the skills needed for the job. When preparing for the interview, consider the qualities that the interviewer might be looking for, qualities like conflict management, time management or people skills. Then think about how you can demonstrate those qualities in a range of situations. Start with situations that you’ve experienced and move on to other possible situations that you might encounter in the role you’re applying for.
Avoid: Going off-topic, changing the subject and not answering the original question. Whatever type of questions they ask, interviewers want to find the right person and are keen to give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you can do. With some preparation, you can show them that you’re the perfect fit for the job.
№2. Are the sentences true or false? Correct false ones:
1. The main message in this article is that you should spend time preparing for a job interview if you have one coming up.
2. If the interviewer asks you about yourself, you should make sure all the information you give is relevant to the job.
3. You should avoid talking about personal things like your hobbies.
4. If the interviewer asks you about an item on your CV, you can give more detail and say how it is connected to the job you’re applying for.
5. The STAR technique can be used to organize your story when answering competency questions.
6. You should never talk about difficulties you’ve experienced at work.
7. You can’t prepare for hypothetical interview questions.
8. It helps to think about the skills and qualities that the interviewer is looking for when answering interview questions.
№3. Put the questions in the correct groups:
Common interview questions, Competency questions, Hypothetical questions
Describe a difficult decision you’ve made. Why do you want this job? What would you do if a team member was performing badly? Tell us about a time when you led a team to achieve an objective. What would you do if your project goals suddenly changed? Do you consider yourself successful? Why? What would you do if you became dissatisfied with your job? What motivates you? Tell us about a new skill that you’ve learned for work.

In the corporate world, it is very common for men to wear a “suit” to work – a collared long sleeve shirt, a tie and smart pants with a jacket, along with smart shoes. Wearing a suit to work shows your respect and attitude towards your job. Women wear something similar to what men wear. It is more common and acceptable for women to wear pants now, so either smart pants with a shirt and a jacket. There is also the option of wearing a skirt – which should never be shorter than a hand above the knee. Anything higher will be seen as inappropriate and unaccep-table.
Each company has their own dress code. Some companies are more relaxed than others. In general (including smart casual), here are some examples of what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable: acceptable - casual trousers, smart pants or smart jeans; collared shirts, turtlenecks or sweaters; smart skirts and dresses; unacceptable - T-shirts or sweatshirts with logos, low cut or strapless tops; showing any underwear.
