There are many professions in the world of information technology (IT), each of which plays an important role in the creation, support and development of technologies. For those who are just starting their way into IT, it is important to understand the names and descriptions of various professions in English. This will help not only in finding a job, but also in communicating with colleagues and employers internationally.

Software developers create applications and systems that solve specific tasks. They write code, test and debug programs. The main programming languages include Python, Java, C++ and others. Developers can specialize in various fields such as web development, mobile applications, or game development. They can also work in a team with other developers, designers and project managers to create comprehensive software solutions.

System administrators are responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining servers and networks. They make sure that all systems work smoothly and efficiently. Their responsibilities include monitoring systems, managing users and access, and ensuring data security. System administrators often work with various operating systems, such as Windows, Linux and Unix, and should be prepared to respond quickly to any technical problems.

Network engineers design and manage networks to ensure their security and performance. They work with routers, switches, and other network devices. Network engineers also set up virtual private networks (VPNs), firewalls, and other security features. Their work includes analyzing network traffic, identifying and eliminating bottlenecks, and planning and implementing new network solutions to improve performance and security.

Database administrators manage databases to ensure their integrity, security, and availability. They work with database management systems (DBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle. Their responsibilities include data backup, crash recovery, and query optimization to improve performance. Database administrators also develop and implement security policies to protect data from unauthorized access.

IT support specialists help users solve technical problems. They can work with both hardware and software, providing advice and troubleshooting. Technical support specialists often work in call centers or support services, where they respond to user requests by phone, email, or via online chats. They can also provide user training and create documentation to solve common problems.

Cybersecurity analysts protect systems and data from cyber attacks. They analyze threats, develop protection measures, and respond to security incidents. Their responsibilities include monitoring network traffic, detecting suspicious activity, and conducting incident investigations. Cybersecurity analysts also develop and implement security policies, audit systems, and train employees in the basics of cybersecurity.

DevOps engineers combine development and operations to improve the software development process. They automate processes, ensuring fast and reliable code delivery. DevOps engineers work with automation tools such as Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes, as well as cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Their goal is to create efficient and stable software development, testing, and deployment processes.

Cloud architects develop and manage cloud infrastructures. They select the appropriate cloud services and ensure their integration with existing systems. Cloud solution architects work with various cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud and develop strategies for migrating data and applications to the cloud. They also ensure the security and scalability of cloud solutions, as well as optimize the cost of using cloud resources.

AI engineers are developing systems that can perform tasks that require human intelligence. They work with machine learning algorithms, neural networks and other AI technologies. №8. Read and translate the text “Jobs and Professions”.

As has been the case for many years, jobs, or forms of employment wherein employees perform a service or duty in exchange for financial compensation, play a prominent role in society. Furthermore, all jobs - even those of seemingly little significance - are important, as they simply wouldn't exist if their specific responsibilities weren't of value to employers (companies or persons that pay others for their work), customers (individuals who pay money for a product or service), and the economy generally.

Teachers, or educational professionals tasked with helping students understand certain subjects and topics, are especially crucial today. In short, teachers help their students to become qualified for their future careers.

Doctors, or medical professionals who specialize in providing health-related assistance to patients, are some of the most respected individuals in America and the world. It's the responsibility of doctors to help those who feel less-than-stellar to determine the underlying health issue(s) and recommend an effective treatment (or remedy to a disease, disorder, or condition).

There are quite a few types of specialty doctors in America (besides MD, which simply means "medical doctor"), all of whom can be referred to simply as "Doctor (Name)." Dentists (mouth/teeth doctors), dermatologists (skin doctors), and psychiatrists (mental-health doctors) are just a few examples of the many different types of doctors.

Additionally, nurses are medical professionals who help to administer doctor-ordered treatments to patients.

Police officers are law enforcement professionals whose job it is to protect citizens, solve crimes, and assure that rules and regulations are followed. Similarly, firefighters serve the public by responding to fires (and other emergency situations) and using high-tech equipment to extinguish these fires, while bringing any individuals who're in danger to safety.

Farmers maintain fields of crops (or vegetable/fruit plants) and/or collections of animals with the intention of selling these products as food.

Chefs/cooks prepare meals in professional settings, including restaurants, cafeterias, and other venues wherein food and drink are sold, for customers. Chefs are generally experienced in cooking and managing kitchens.

Waiters bring menus, beverages, meals, and ultimately, the check (or a bill of the foods and drinks purchased in a transaction) to tables in restaurants and other establishments that serve food.

Artists produce art, or works of creative significance, including music, paintings, drawings, poetry, writing, and more.

№9. Write out 10 plural nouns from the text and translate them.

№10. Write out 5 Irregular verbs and 5 Regular verbs from the text and write 3 forms of each of them.

Lesson 3

CAREER IN IT: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

№1. Read and translate the text:

Computer and information systems are one of the most fast-growing industries in the world. With so many new information technologies appearing, it is no surprise that new job opportunities arise constantly and more and more people are interested in pursuing a career in this market. However, before choosing an IT career, it’s a good idea to learn its pros and cons.

IT Career Advantages

High income: Entry-level jobs may be the exception, but once you get ahead in IT, you are looking at a very high salary. IT professionals are well-paid and live a financially stable life, which is enough for many to consider getting into the industry.

Varied job opportunities: IT is an amazingly versatile industry. You can choose from a wide range of job opportunities, such as becoming a software engineer, video game designer, web designer, 3D animator, data analyst, systems analyst, cybersecurity expert, and so much more. Wherever your strengths lie, IT will have a place for you.

Non-strenuous work: Sitting at a desk for at least eight hours a day has its disadvantages, such as developing poor posture or gaining weight. However, sitting in a comfy office is hardly strenuous work. In IT you won’t find a problem of working outdoors in bad weather conditions. Moreover, you might get the perk of working from home.

Dynamic work assignments: In IT, no two projects are the same. You can be making a mobile app one day and a web platform the next. Dynamic work of this type requires a dynamic personality. If you enjoy challenges, then IT will be a good fit for you.

IT Career Disadvantages

Stressful environment: Deadlines are very important in IT. Projects need to be planned out, developed, tested, and sent back to the client or released on a strict schedule. The development team usually has no control over this schedule, since managers handle that side of the business. So you can’t make many errors or work slowly.

If you decide to work freelance, then you will face clients who have no IT knowledge and can not explain what they want from you or the software you’re making for them. So, be prepared to deal with a lot of miscommunication and constant stress to meet deadlines in this kind of work.

Little free time: Most jobs require sacrificing free time. IT is not an exception. Even if you’re doing everything right, it may happen that you need to cancel a family picnic or a romantic dinner, or work weekends when faced with a problem or a project that is running late.

Continual training and education: This last con might be considered a pro for some. IT is constantly developing, new software, technologies, and programming languages are constantly being released, and it’s not easy to keep up with all of that. To stay ahead of your competitors, you will need to constantly educate yourself. This isn’t always an easy thing to do, especially if you are working long hours.

Lesson 5

My future profession

№1. Read and translate the text:

Software breaks. Hardware breaks. We need someone to fix those things. That someone is a system administrator. As long as we have things that break, we will need system administrators. The automobile is more than 100 years old, and yet you still have mechanics to fix cars because they still break. These magical devices in our hands are so far advanced, yet there are mobile phone repair shops in every city, and they're all very busy. Things break. We need a fixer. System administrators fix things. We need system administrators.

So, what exactly does this job entail? A system administrator wears many hats and the smaller your environment, the more hats you will wear. A system administrator covers backups, file restores, disaster recovery, hardware maintenance, automation, user maintenance, filesystem housekeeping, application installation and configuration, and system security management. System administration covers just about every aspect of hardware and software management for both physical and virtual systems.

You also need a broad knowledge base of network configuration, virtualization, operating systems, and interoperability. A system administrator needs to have some technical knowledge of network security, firewalls, databases, and all aspects of a working network. The reason is that, there are hundreds of fail points in a network and your job is to help locate and resolve failures.

System administration also requires that you stay on top of best practices, learn new software, maintain patches, comply with security notifications, and update hardware. A system administrator's day is very full. In fact, you never really finish, but you have to pick a point in time to abandon your activities. Being a system administrator is a 24x7x365 job, which does take its toll on you physically and mentally. You'll hear a lot about burnout in this field.

It can be said that doing the technical stuff is relatively easy. It's dealing with people that makes the job really hard. That sounds terrible but it's true. On one side, you deal with your management, which is not always easy. You are the person who gets blamed when things go wrong and when things go right, it's "just part of your job." It's a tough place to be.

Coworkers don't seem to make life better for the system administrator. They should, but they often don't. You'll deal with lazy, unmotivated coworkers so often that you'll feel that you're carrying all the weight of the job yourself. Fortunately, not all coworkers are bad – some are helpful, diligent, and proactive.

And then there are users. Oh, the bane of every system administrator's life, the end user! A system administrator once said, "You know, this would be a great job if I just didn't have to interface with users." Many would agree. But then again, with no users, there's probably also no job. Dealing with computers is easy. Dealing with people is hard. Learn to breathe, smile, and comply if you want to survive and maintain your sanity.

Information technology (IT) is a loaded term. For this reason, there’s ambiguity over what an IT professional does. Since IT encompasses many aspects of the world of computers and more, we share the ins and outs of the types of jobs and duties one can possess within the field.

IT professionals are the people who build, test, install, repair, and maintain hardware and software within organizations. Some organizations will have an in-house IT team, whereas smaller-scale businesses may hire freelance IT professionals for specific tasks.

IT professionals usually have a background in computer science or information technology. Because of the changing and evolving nature of technology and systems, IT professionals benefit from continuous education and completing certification programs. IT can be broken down into its three main categories: governance, infrastructure, and operations. As such, the duties of IT professionals fulfill the needs of each.

There are various paths that one can take to land a role in IT. Without any education, it’s possible to work in entry-level customer support positions to learn the ropes through on-the-job training. To go a step further, you can enroll in online certification programs to obtain technical knowledge. This is an especially good route to take if you know the position you wish to land.

For high-level positions and the greatest opportunity, you’ll want to earn a degree. By studying computer science, you can hone both hard and soft skills to excel in the world of IT.
