City gates

City gates were the main entrances to walled town in the past

They controlled trade and security, and they were places where taxes or tolls were collected

Many gates had towers, battlements, and heavy wooden doors reinforced with iron

At night the doors were closed, and guards kept watch

Some gates included a portcullis and «murder holes» for dеfense

Markets and customs posts often grew near the gates because travelers stopped there

Gates also served as symbols of power and a formal welcome to visitors

In peaceful times they were decorated with coats of arms, statues, or inscriptions

Today, city gates survive as monuments and popular tourist attractions

Famous examples include the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem

Some cities have rebuilt lost gates to preserve their heritage

City gates remind us how town were organized and protected before modern times
